Veteran Saves Dog With CPR
Randy Gurchin, a disabled combat veteran of the United States Air Force, saved his 10-month old English Bulldog Lady by administering CPR to the dog.
Lady chased ducks onto a semi-frozen lake near Gurchin's home when the ice cracked and Lady briefly fell into the water. Gurchin, who walks with a cane, raced out to rescue Lady, who was blue and unresponsive and had a bloody foam on her snout.
But Gurchin, 51, put his military first-aid training to use. He closed Lucy’s mouth, put his mouth over her nose and started forcing air into her lungs and pushing on her chest.
Within minutes, the dog began breathing shallowly and was rushed to a nearby veterinarian.
Lucy's veterinarian administered the proper care for the dog's condition. She has since made a full recovery.
All dog owners should know how to administer basic first aid, including CPR, to their dogs. A step by step illustrated instruction guide on many canine first aid techniques, including canine CPR, is hosted at HowStuffWorks.com.
